Sherlock Holmes—Movie

Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie, and starring Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson, is a huge disappointment. A truly re-imagined Sherlock Holmes is an interesting idea and I really wish this new movie was that. The previews lead one to believe that this is vintage Guy Ritchie…action, quips, bold, booming and quickly paced. This movie is emphatically not that. What it is is hugely boring. It is full of quips, but quips do not a movie make. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, but chemistry does not a script make nor does it make for good acting. I love Robert Downey, Jr., but he is horrible. His accent is abysmal and he mumbles most of his lines, perhaps to hide the fact that he surprisingly cannot maintain an English accent.  Jude Law as Watson is fine, but…not that it matters…when did he lose his looks?  Save your money and rent Ritchie’s Snatch or Downey’s Tropical Thunder instead.
